Reclaiming Your Animal from HSYC

All Animals picked up by the City of Graham Animal Control, City of Graham Police Officers, Young County Sheriff's Officers, and Olney Animal Control are brought to HSYC.

Animals with no ID tags become the property of HSYC after being held 72 hours (excluding Sundays) and go up for adoption or are available for rescue pending good health and temperament.  Animals with ID (ID tag, current rabies tag, microchip) become property of HSYC after 5 days (excluding Sundays). Once stray hold time has expired and ownership is tranferred to HSYC the animal must be adopted through the normal adoption process, which includes turning in an application, having the application approved and paying the adoption fee.

Animals in HSYC's care MAY require some or all of the following to reclaim:

Payment of city pick up fees and signature on any citations issued by Animal Control, HSYC impoundment fees, intake fees, and boarding fees. These fees are broken down and explained below.

To Reclaim animals picked up by Graham Animal Control: (payments to city per current City Ordinances)

*First Impoundment: A $30.00 Pick Up Fee is to be paid at the Police Dept

*Second Impoundment: A $60 pick up fee is to be paid at the Police Dept

*Third Impoundment: A $90 pick up fee is to be paid at the Police Dept

Animals who are not yet microchipped, will be required to be chipped at the owner's expense ($15 fee) prior to reclaiming.

Animals who are impounded for the third time in a 12 month period, will be required to be spayed or neutered at the owner's expense prior to being reclaimed.

Owners are required to present a receipt from the PD showing payment of fees at the shelter upon reclaiming.  If citations have been issued by the city animal control, the owner must contact the Animal Control Officer (940) 549-6441 and citations signed before the animal can be reclaimed. Receipts of the signed citations must be presented to the shelter at time of reclaim. There may be additional charges due at HSYC, depending on intake and boarding since the animal came into the shelter.

To Reclaim animals picked up by Olney Animal Control: Payments to city per current City Ordinances

*Owners must contact the Olney Police Department to pay registration fees.

*Proof of current rabies vaccine is required or the owner will have to prepay for a rabies vaccine at a local vet clinic.

*Owners must then go to City Hall to pay any  fines.

These fines increase for repeat offenders. The receipts are then brought to the shelter before the animal can be released. There may also be intake charges and/or boarding charges at HSYC. This will depend on circumstances. Contact us for more information.

For any animal held at HSYC:

In addition to the above:

A $15.00 per day boarding fee is charged when the animal enters the gates onto the property.  Boarding charges are charged at 12:01 pm daily including the day the aimal leaves unless picked up prior to 12 noon (unless prior arrangements have been made with the shelter staff).

$75 per animal is charged to cover incoming vetting that is provided to keep all animals at the shelter healthy. This fee helps cover the costs of vaccines (DAVP, Bordo, Canine Influenza) heartworm test, deworming, and flea/tick prevention if parasites are present at intake for dogs and FVRCP vaccine, FELV/FIV test, deworming and flea/tick prevention if parasites are present for cats.

A $15 fee will apply to all animals not already microchipped, to cover chipping.

HSYC reserves the right to charge the following impoundment fees:

For spayed/neutered animals:

1st impoundment: Free pass if proof of spay/neuter & current rabies vaccine is provided.

2nd impoundment in any rolling 12 month period: $25

3rd impoundment in any rolling 12 month period:  $50

after the 3rd impoundment fees will continue to increase in $25 increments from the previous charge.

For intact animals:

1st impoundment: $50 fee, unless owner chooses to readopt the animal at HSYC's current adoption fee which will waive all other fees incurred (including any City Fees). This fee will include all of the following: all vaccines listed above, testing listed above, deworming, microchip, and flea/tick prevention if needed.

2nd impoundment in any rolling 12 month period: $100

For each impoundment after the 2nd in any rolling 12 month period, fees will increase in $50 increments from the previous charge.

If the readopt option is chosen, the animal will be available for reclaim once the animal has received spay/neuter surgery and rabies vaccine. This will be performed by a veterinarian of HSYC's choosing.

Impoundment fees for other non-dog/cat animals:

Small animals (includes chickens, small mammals, retiles, etc) $10

Small Livestock (includes miniature pigs, goats, or comparable sized animals) $50

Large Livestock (includes farm pigs, cows, horses, donkeys, etc) $100

These charges apply to any animal held at HSYC, whether brought in by Animal Control or found by an individual.

The owner of the animal is the only person who shall claim any City impounded animal, unless prior arrangements have been made. A driver's license or other ID will be required and a form must be completed. Proof of ownership in the form of microchip, veterinarian records, personal photos, registration information, etc must be provided upon request.

If the animal is not spayed/neutered a one time re-adopt may be offered with all other fees waived by the Animal Control Officer and HSYC. The re-adopt fee will be the current adoption fee charged by HSYC.
